Discussion prompt #2

I believe that the definition of homemade would be something that can be made by someone. Homemade can also be more personable, rather than something that is store bought. I believe that by buying a storebought item you are being a very nice person and making sacrifices to get someone something. However, personally, I much rather receiving gifts that are home made. It makes me very appreciative that someone would take the time to make me something. I'm grateful either way, but I really appreciate someone who goes out the way to be creative and take the time to make me something. Store bought items usually require more money, but it usually is safer to buy someone a gift because you can always get an idea of what they like by their intrests or hobbies. However, not everyone may understand the importance of something that is home made. They may think that it is childish, or that the person is greedy with money. I have never known anyone personally that has educated themseleves outside of school, but there are people who have. Back in the time when there were slaves, the slaves weren't allowed to learn how the read and write. And I'm sure most of them were forced to learn on their own. And for that, I think that is very admirable.
He relates these in the concept of his work by showing how he worked hard and educated himself. He was in prison, but he knew that he still could have the satisfaction of being intelligent. He knew that it was crucial to have an education. He may have been in prison, but he still had the freedom of his education. And even though he was locked inside of a jail, he was still an intelligent person. And no one could take away that from him.
I am most intrested about writing and reading literature. I always try to write a journal entry every night before I go to bed. If I were in the same situation as Malcome X, I would probably write poetry alot and maybe even a book. I would hope that after I was released, I would be able to publish some of my work. I would take some of the experiences and put it into my writing and would be able to tell my story to those intrested in reading it. By reading and writing every day, I would probably be more literate and educated enough to continue on with a career to become a writer.

  1. I agree with you when you said you rather someone give you a homemade gift. I'd rather a homemade gift too because it's much personal and valuable. You would cherish it more because it was made with love.

  2. I think you're very right about some people not appreciating homemade things because they are greedy with money. I know many people that only want the expensive things because they just have the money and know that they can buy it. It also gives them a feeling of power because they're "rich". I think it's horrible. They'll never really know the importance of a homemade gift from someone who loves them because what they care about is the physical value of an object.
I also think that Malcolm X relates to that because of how important it was to him to have an education. There were many things that could have brought him down and made him not want to do anything, but that didn't stop him. He wanted an education and the sense of being free to better his own life.

  3. I agree with you on the strengths and weaknesses of homemade gifts. Homemade can draw several opinions, whether its good or bad. Many people do take homemade as a serious thing. Especially if its a gift.
I like that you said Malcolm X did have freedom even in prison. There are different forms of freedom; Malcolm X had freedom of education.
